In fact, both parts could be good or bad depending on what you choose to do with them. But Jung separated the shadow from the ‘ID’ because it doesn’t have to be seen as bad. It’s a selfish, self-indulgent part of who we are. This part of ourselves is present at birth and its only concern is that our needs are being met. For those who don’t know, the ‘ID’ is part of our primal self where survival is the only thing that matters. You might be thinking this sounds a lot like Freud’s ‘ID’ since this theory is more widely known. Then we can overcome our past trauma and learn to move forward. Like anything, it’s good to tackle these emotions and our shadow head-on. The straw that broke the camel’s back per se. You know what I mean, we all have those outbursts. However, we all know that repressing negative emotions is not a positive thing. We may become depressed, feel negative emotions like anger, envy, or greed… Our shadow is the darkest part of us that is not ideal, but it’s also an important part of who we are because it makes up our individuality.Īnother way our shadow side may emerge is through negative self-talk and self-sabotage because you aren’t accepting every part of yourself.
